THE PITTSBURGH MARATHON IS BACK IN 2009?
stated that The Pittsburgh Marathon will return in 2009. Details on date, cost, route or name have not been finalized, but a spokesman from the county has confirmed that they are working dilegently with the city to make it all happen.
However, our friends who have been working on this project would only say that they have some of the pieces of the puzzle in place, but no official announcement has been made. That announcement will be made by the key sponsors when all the details are done. Until then, we can all be optimistically hopeful!
Stay tuned for details on this announcment as well as a training program to kick off this summer for the Great Race, another this fall for runners wanting to take on an early spring race like The Spring Thaw or Just A Short Run, and finally a program to kick off in January 2009 for those already training who want to to run Pittsburgh's reincarnated marathon.
Although this item is not specifically about running, it has significance for our owner, Kevin Smith. He lost his brother Sean, 13 years ago to leukemia and this event launched his distance running through Team in Training and the eventual opening of Elite Runners & Walkers in 1999. A year after the store opened, Kevin started a 1/2 marathon race, Just A Short Run, to continue raising funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
We urge you to read on and join Amy's Army as you might be the one to help Amy or another by taking a simple test and adding yourself to the National Marrow Registry.

If you are reading this please take an extra minute to help save a life -- click here and register to be entered in the National Bone Marrow Registry. A simple cheek-swab test kit will be mailed to you for FREE!In honor of Mother's Day, people from across the country will be working together with one goal in mind: to save lives.
For many, the inspiration is Amy Katz, a vibrant, motivated 15-year-old who happens to have an adult form of leukemia affecting less than five percent of children. The only known cure for her cancer is a bone marrow transplant, however, she, and thousands like her have not yet found a match among the 10 million donors on the worldwide database.
'Amy’s Army' was formed to help Amy find her match by hosting marrow screening drives in order to register more potential donors. These drives have registered over 8,000 new donors and created matches for 22 other patients, but not for Amy. I hope that you will consider registering to become a potential bone marrow donor in the National Marrow Registry. |
